Asseco Prokom Gdynia bulked up its frontline by signing veteran center Ratko Varda to a one-month contract with an option to extend it for the rest of the season.
He returns to the Euroleague after playing two games for Zalgiris last season. Varda (213, 30) finished last season with Khimki Moscow Region, averaging 6.7 points in six Eurocup games, helping the club reach the title game. Varda made his debut with Partizan Belgrade in 1998 and in 2001 he crossed the pond to join Detroit of the NBA.
He was traded to Washington and was back to Europe for the 2002-03 season with Union Olimpija Ljubljana, where he won the Slovenian Cup. After that he played in Greece (Apollon Patras), Turkey (Besiktas JK), Ukraine (BC Kyiv) and Spain (Real Madrid and ViveMenorca). In the 2006-07 season with Madrid, Varda won the Spanish League title and the ULEB Cup. He played for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team in the EuroBasket qualifying last season, averaging 12.5 points in 21 minutes over four games.
