Zalgiris Kaunas rewarded team captain Dainius Salenga for another strong season with a contract extension that will keep him with the Lithuanian powerhouse for a ninth season.
Salenga (197, 33) penned a one-year extension with a team option for the 2011-2012 season. He started all 16 Euroleague games for the club this season, helping Zalgiris reach the Top 16. Salenga averaged 10.3 points and set a career high with 41.1% three-point shooting. His best game of the season came in Regular Season, Week 6, when he came within a point of his career-high as he scored 25 against Asvel Basket on 5-of-5 two-point shooting and 6-of-7 free throw shooting en route to a 28 index rating and weekly MVP honors.
Salenga has appeared in 107 Euroleague games – all with Zalgiris – since he joined Zalgiris in 2001. He started his career at Farmeka Vilnius and also played for Sakalai Vilnius before joining Zalgiris. He later spent two seasons in Spain with Akasvayu Girona, winning the 2007 FIBA EuroCup along the way. Among his other career highlights are winning the Lithuanian championship five times and the Baltic League twice with Zalgiris. Salenga also won the 2003 European championship and played at the 2004 Olympic Games with the Lithuanian national team.
