Asvel Basket announced on Friday the addition of two new forwards.
The first is a familiar face to Euroleague fans, Mickael Gelabale (201, 27), and the second is a newcomer to the competition, Davon Jefferson (203, 23). Gelabale arrives from Cholet Basket, to where he returned last year in time to play five Eurocup games and average 7.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, while also helping the team winning the French League last season. Gelabale was named MVP of the French League final. Before joining Cholet last November, he finished the 2008-09 season with Los Angeles of the NBDL, averaging 16 points in six games. Gelabale had played for Cholet at the start of his career, playing two seasons in the ULEB Cup. In the second of those, he averaged 10.2 points and 5.3 rebounds over 10 games for Cholet before joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2004. With Madrid, he averaged 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in 19 Euroleague games the following season. He helped Madrid win the Spanish League title in 2005, before joining the NBA to play for Seattle. Gelabale appeared in 109 games for an average of 15 minutes and 4.5 points during his two years in Seattle. Gelabale is an accomplished dunker who won the Spanish League Slam Dunk contest in 2004 and 2005. He has also been a member of the French national team, winning the bronze medal at EuroBasket 2005.
The other new face at Asvel Basket is forward Davon Jefferson, who arrives from Maccabi Haifa of the Israeli League. He played there for two seasons and in the last campaign averaged 17.2 points and 8.4 boards per game, ranking second on the league's rebounding charts. Jefferson came to Israel after playing one season of college basketball at University of Southern California. In his first year playing in the Israeli League, Jefferson earned the Sixth Man Award with 16.7 points and 7.9 boards per game, helping Haifa reaching the title game that year.
