Spanish League champion and 2009 Final Four participant Regal FC Barcelona has extended its contract with head coach Xavi Pascual until the end of the 2010-11 season, the club confirmed Monday.
Pascual, 37, made his first-division professional debut as Barcelona's head coach midway through the 2007-08 season, right after Dusko Ivanovic was released from the club. Pascual, an assistant at the time, was promoted to head coach. He immediately earned credit for helping Barcelona to reach the Spanish League finals.
Last season, his first full campaign on the Barcelona bench, proved a breakthrough one in Pascual's career. The team reached the Final Four of the Euroleague for the first time in three years and finished in third place. Then, Pascual and Barcelona won the Spanish League title. His fellow coaches in the Spanish League voted Pascual that competition's Coach of the Year.
The current season began with a Spanish Supercup title. Through four Euroleague games, Barcelona is one of only three undefeated teams left. Pascual started his career coaching several clubs in Catalonia until 2004, when he first entered Barcelona as its second team's boss. Soon after that, Pascual later was appointed director of the club's farm system, just before becoming Ivanovic's assistant coach on the first team in 2005.
