SIENA- Jonas Maciulis is officially a Mens Sana player and had is first practice and a full-fledge “Montepaschino”. During his days in Viale Sclavo, he convinced the coaching staff, as Coach Simone Pianigiani said many times. David Moss’s operation Monday left a registration spot open; the last available to the Viale Sclavo club.
Well-spent, judging by the dedication shown by the Lithuanian athlete made to “try out” at PalaEstra last week. He’ll be covering a role that should have been Summers’, in other words, a very precise spot in the set-up designed last summer but never really tested during this trying year. The ex Armani Milano player’s contracti is through the end of the season for the moment, but there’s an option for another season. Now we’ll let the court speak..
Who is Jonas Maciulis? He was born in Kaunas on February 10, 1985. Maciulis develops his skills on the youth sector at Zalgiris Kaunas. He debuts in the second Lithuanian league on the second team of the green-and-whites in 2002/2003, then debuts in the highest series in 2004/2005 wearing Nevezis Kedainiai’s jersey. He plays an average of 27.1, and makes an average of 14.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He returns to Zalgiris the following year and plays four seasons, growing from 11.7 ppg in 2005-2006 to 14.9 ppg in 2008-2009. In Euroleague, his average number of points goes from 4 points in 2005-2006 (in 20 games) to 14, with 41% from the three-point zone in 2008-2009 (in 10 games). With Zalgiris, he earns two Lithuanian Cups and wins the Baltic League two times. The 2009/2010 season, Maciulis comes to the Italian Championship by joining AJ Milano, with whom he plays two championships. He immediately brings in good numbers in both the Italian League and Euroleague, with 8.2 and 10.2 ppg averages in the competitions. He also has a meaningful performance the following year with an average of 9.4 ppg in the championship before sustaining a knee injury that puts an end to his season. After surgery and physical therapy, Jonas Maciulis returned to play in Lithuania this year for Baltai Kaunas, with whom he concluded his experience with a 19.6 ppg and a 6.9 rpg average. Then came a call from Siena and the rest is present history. The new Mensanite was a member of all the youth Nationals in his country. With them, he earned the gold medal at the 2005 Under 21 World Championship, as well as other awards. He’s a member of the Nationals Majors, with whom he won the bronze medal at the 2007 Europeans in Spain (9 games and 1.8 ppg avg,). He also played 5 games at the 2008 Olympics (4.8 ppg) and 6 games at the 2009 Europeans (8.3 ppg). The summer of 2010, he wore Lithuanian Nationals jersey at the Worlds in Turkey, playing 9 games and averaging 9.0 ppg and 54.5% to contribute to his team winning the bronze medal.
