Zalgiris and Butautas parted ways
After just two months together, Zalgiris Kaunas and head coach Ramunas Butautas have parted ways, the club announced on Tuesday before the team left to play Unicaja in a Top 16 Group G road game in Malaga, Spain.
Also leaving the club is sports director Algirdas Brazys, himself a former head coach of the team, from 2000 to 2003. Zalgiris will be led on Wednesday against Unicaja by a pair of interim coaches, Darius Maskoliunas and Gvidonas Markevicius, who were assistants until now this season and already directed practice on Monday evening. The departure of Butautas marks the second head coaching switch for Zalgiris this season. He had replaced Gintaras Krapikas, who resigned in December after 1-7 start in the Euroleague regular season. Zalgiris rallied under Butautas to win its last two regular season games and reach the Top 16, but has lost its first two games in Top 16 Group G by a combined 39 points. In the Baltic League, Zalgiris has a 12-2 record, while in the Lithuanian League, it stands at 12-0.
