Cajasol has started to prepare for its Eurocup debut by inking shooting guard Txemi Urtasun to a two-year deal, the club announced Thursday.
Urtasun (193, 26) arrives from Meridiano Alicante, where he averaged 10.6 points and 1.9 assists in 34 Spanish League games last season. He has also played for Estudiantes, Guipuzcoa BC, Breogan, CAI Zaragoza, U.B. La Palma, Bilbao Basket and Siglo XXI Pais Vasco in his native Spain. Urtasun, whose twin brother Alex also played professional basketball, has been a member of the Spanish under-18 and U-20 national teams. He helped Alicante reach the Spanish first division in 2009, lifting the Principe de Asturias Cup - played by Spanish second division teams - trophy that season.
"Txemi has character and is a great shooter. We hope he can adjust to the new three-point distance to keep being an important threat from the perimeter. He improved a lot in recent years," Cajasol sports director Juan Llaneza said. "We have great references from him as a person, too. He shows his compromise with his teams, is ambitious and has an outstanding work ethic. His sports and human values are precisely what we are looking for."
