Dzikic stepped down from Olimpija
After his team lost by 21 points in a key Euroleague home game on Thursday, head coach Aleksandar Dzikic has resigned the bench at Union Olimpija. Dzikic's announcement came less than 24 hours after Olimpija lost 65-86 to visiting DKV Joventut. It was the worst Euroleague home loss in Olimpija's history.
The team's record fell to 1-5, keeping it in last place in Group A with just four games remaining in the regular season. "I never expected such a loss, given that this game for us was the last chance to keep thinking about the Top 16," Dzikic said after the game. "Now, everything is over. This was the worst game by Union Olimpija since I became the coach...I can only ask forgiveness of the fans."
Dzikic's resignation came alongside that of club vice-president Peter Vilfan. The club is said to be looking for a head coaching replacement to be announced shortly. Dzikic, 37, joined Olimpija in the middle of last season, compiling an overall Euroleague record of 2-9 before stepping down on Friday. He had previously been an assistant in his native Belgrade with Partizan and in the NBA with Minnesota.
