Zalgiris got rid of Maskoliunas

The events at Zalgiris’ basketball club reached the boiling point.

Head coach Darius Maskoliunas wasn’t allowed into the evening practice as the club’s owner Vladmir Romanov ordered him to resign on the doorstep of Zalgiris’ training facilities. Assistant coach Gvidonas Markevicius was offered to take over as the team’s head coach, but was said to have declined the offer at first. However, the club itself reported that Markevicius will be promoted to the head coach position, even though the club’s owner envisioned Marcus Brown and Sarunas Sakalauskas at the helm of the team.

Vladimir Romanov let his team know about the wishes for change in the coaching staff before yesterday’s game against Lietuvos Rytas as he reportedly asked Maskoliunas to resign, but the players stood behind the former coach and the club’s owner had no choice, but to let Maskoliunas coach in what ended as a 81-83 loss to Lietuvos Rytas.
