Slovenia coach Jure Zdovc has announced a star-studded 24-man preliminary squad for EuroBasket 2009 which includes a host of NBA players but not Rasho Nesterovic. Zdovc had hoped to lure the Indiana center out of international retirement but the seven-footer is not in the group.
Nesterovic announced after last year's FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament that his time as the national team center had come to an end. Los Angeles Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic, who is in the NBA Finals with Phil Jackson's team taking on the Orlando Magic, is among the 10 guards in the preliminary group. Veteran power forward Matjaz Smodis of CSKA Moscow has been named captain of the team.
